Place Value describes the value of digits within a number. Some students are able to grasp the concept of numbers with one to two digits but as the number of digits increase, it can get overwhelming.
One thing that can help, is to link these concepts to common everyday things. One which I used with my student was the papers, specifically the section containing adertisements of travel packages. These packages normally cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Getting students to find their ideal destination to visit and to compare the prices of the different packages, does indeed help them to understand better. It is also a fun activity that they would enjoy. :) With the ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions, advertisements for cars and houses can be used.
It would be preferable to use this as a supplement to reinforce the place value chart describing the progression from ones to tens to hundreds to thousands etc.
