Division by 2-digit divisor

It seemed that almost every other student I came across, when they encounter a division problem involving a 2-digit divisor, would always solve it in the same way. They would break the number up and solve using the first digit before going to the next.

When we use the long division method to solve a division problem, it is only the dividend, which is the number on the inside, that we would work using the first digit, followed by the next, and so on and so forth. The divisor, which is the number on the outside, must be used in its entirety. Imagine this, you are outside, about to go into a house. You can't split yourselves up to go into the house. You would however have to first step into the house, into the the first room, usually the hallway, then into the next room, and onto the next, until you have gone into all the rooms.

This helps the student visualise the problem and serves as a reminder to always consider the divisor in its entirety. :)
