I recently attended an online tutoring workshop, and came away much more informed and online ready.
We were introduced to different online platforms which could facilitate our online lessons and some key takeaways regarding the conduct of the lessons. The one platform I found most useful, which was also the one recommended, is Zoom. This platform allows us to use a whiteboard on our screens which we can use to scribe visuals necessary for our students, as well as displaying onscreen any pre-prepared visuals with the ability to add information as the lesson develops.
I had the opportunity to try this out and found it very user friendly in the navigation of the platform and the use of the whiteboard and the display of PDF documents.
As with all other lessons, access to parents and/or guardians is very important should any unforseen situation arise. In the case of an online lesson, this can only be done via phone. Our tutor manager shared her experience, where her student suddenly collasped during the online lesson and she had to phone the parent. Thankfully, it was a good ending.
A really good takeaway in my opinion. Armed with these information, we all left the workshop much more confident of conducting a fruitful and successful online lesson. I look forward to share on my own online tutoring experience soon.
