Division of single digit numbers

I introducted the use of cubes to help my students understand division better.

The visual component was helpful as they were able to form the dividend using the cubes. This was followed by forming the divisor.

Next the divisor cubes were placed on top of the dividend cubes to represent the divisor going into the dividend. More of the divisor cubes would need to be formed to cover the remaining dividend cubes.

With this process, the student is able to see how many of the divisor goes into the dividend. That number would be the Quotient. Other manipulatives can also be used. Numicon shapes can be very useful in this instance.

The division of double digit numbers and beyond would require the introduction of another concept. Look out for this in the next post... :)
